In Defense of Slow Readers

I love reading. I read at least a little bit most days. I read big, thick books.

But…

I read slowly. It takes me weeks, sometimes months to finish a book. This could be for many reasons. I am often reading more than one book at a time, so even though I read almost every day, I often do not read the same book for more than a few days in a row. I am on the neurodiverse spectrum, some diagnosed and some not, that can affect the rate at which I can intake and retain information. But I also, genuinely, read slowly. I average about 35 pages an hour. I finish about a book per month.

And that is okay.

I started this blog (and the adjoining social media) because I love reading and I love readers. And the best part of reading is that the only requirement of being a reader, is to read. You don’t have to read every day. You don’t have to read a certain number of books. You don’t have read a certain kind of book. You just have to read.

So consider this your open invitation. If you read, you are a reader. Period. You are welcome here in the Gnarled Nook. So grab a drink, some munchies, a book and a cozy corner. Build a blanket fort. Whatever. Get comfy and read.
